Speed daters who romantically desired most of their potential partners were rejected quickly and overwhelmingly, according to a new Northwestern University study. Conventional wisdom has long taught that one of the best ways to get someone to like you is to make it clear that you like them. Now researchers have discovered that this law of reciprocity is in dire need of an asterisk in the domain of romantic attraction. The more you tend to experience romantic desire for all the potential romantic partners you meet, the study shows, the less likely it is that they will desire you in return.
Think too desperate, too indiscriminate. In contrast, when you desire a potential partner above and beyond your other options, only then is your desire likely to be reciprocated. Think hallelujah, finally, someone really gets me. In the past, social psychologists have had a difficult time observing initial romantic attraction in action, but the speed-dating methodology used in this study allowed the investigators to take a serious look at the chemistry that has been at the center of so much literature, art and imagination throughout the ages.
Eastwick, the lead author of the study and a Northwestern graduate student in psychology. Finkel, assistant professor of psychology, will be published in the April issue of the journal Psychological Science. You’re not only able to pick up something about the degree to which that person likes you, but you’re able to pick up — in four minutes — the degree to which that person likes you more than their other dates. It’s amazing.

John S. Using logistic regression to determine speed dating compatibility. N2 – Speed dating has become big business as the new alternative on the dating scene compared to meeting in bars, attending social events or using online dating services. In achieving its aim the results have been quite successful with reports that half of all participants come away with at least one promising match.
Because of the limited time to interact, it is important that there should be a reasonable degree of compatibility between the couples for there to be any chance of a match. To determine their suitability beforehand, the participants are given a survey involving a number of questions and only those who are deemed to be even mildly compatible are arranged to meet in the same session.

Speed Dating (2007)
NEW YORK — Businesses are stealing a page from the modern dating handbook by playing host to “speed networking” events in which professionals move methodically from one business prospect to the next, getting acquainted for just a few minutes at a time. It is the corporate equivalent of speed dating, a practice invented in the late s by a rabbi hoping to fix up Jewish singles, and which has since spread.
Some speed networking events use the same round-robin approach as speed dating, so the participants meet random people in an orderly way.
Watch the trailer. The film tells the story of speed dating addict James Van Der Bexton as he approaches his 30th birthday. Saw it Friday night and really enjoyed it. Great reaction from the audience particularly to Don Wycherley as the inept Detective. To take it so seriously is to miss the point, its a comedy and very funny one at that.
O’Connor is excellent as the rejected Van Der Bexton and some of the speed dating scenes are hilarious. Speed dating is a romantic comedy and while O’Connor lunges from one crazy situation to the next, the events are simply a backdrop to the essence of the film which is Van Der Bexton’s quest for love. Also I just checked out the website and it won the best feature film at the Malibu Film festival and the audience award at the European Independent Film Festival in Paris, so that’s pretty cool!!!

Marriage data show a strong degree of positive assortative mating along a variety of attributes. But since marriage is an equilibrium outcome, it is unclear whether positive sorting is the result of preferences rather than opportunities. We assess the relative importance of preferences and opportunities in dating behaviour, using unique data from a large commercial speed dating agency.
While the speed dating design gives us a direct observation of individual preferences, the random allocation of participants across events generates an exogenous source of variation in opportunities and allows us to identify the role of opportunities separately from that of preferences. We find that both women and men equally value physical attributes, such as age and weight, and that there is positive sorting along age, height, and education.
Tony Herbert’s comedic thriller Speed Dating concerns a men who has inherited millions who decides he can end his lonesomeness through.
Rapidly exploring application design through Speed Dating. Dey, and John Zimmerman. Rapidly exploring application design through speed dating. Springer-Verlag, Berlin, Heidelberg, Bibtex Endnote. While the user-centered design methods we bring from human-computer interaction to ubicomp help sketch ideas and refine prototypes, few tools or techniques help explore divergent design concepts, reflect on their merits, and come to a new understanding of design opportunities and ways to address them.
We present Speed Dating, a design method for rapidly exploring application concepts and their interactions and contextual dimensions without requiring any technology implementation. Situated between sketching and prototyping, Speed Dating structures comparison of concepts, helping identify and understand contextual risk factors and develop approaches to address them.
We illustrate how to use Speed Dating by applying it to our research on the smart home and dual-income families, and highlight our findings from using this method.
